There isn’t one person who claims to be an avid rock fan that hasn’t heard most of the songs on this legendary classic rock album, Led Zeppelin IV. This album has produced many rock anthems like Stairway to Heaven and Rock& Roll. In many ways this album has defined classic rock, with its heavy songs and its slower songs this album really spans the genre. Robert Plant’s voice is so iconic that his voice defined the band along with the musical genius of Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham.
IV was released in 1971, but some of the most iconic songs on the album can still be heard on rock radio stations to this day. In my opinion, and I think most classic rock listeners agree but yet o not take away from the song, Stairway to Heaven was and still is way too overplayed. Even if this song showcases the band’s vast amounts of talent, the song still didn’t deserve that kind of abuse by DJ’s. My personal favorites off this album have to be Black Dog and Rock& Roll. This time I was very hard pressed to try and pick just one song. The way plant screams in both songs is amazing when paired with Page’s guitar. While they compose most noticeable parts of the song, Bonham and Jones drum beats and bass licks are surprisingly complicated and if you listen really close you can hear it.
Just this one album has inspired so many musicians; it isn’t difficult to say that it is possible that this is one of the best and most influential albums to grace this earth. Although some songs are overplayed, it shouldn’t take away from this album’s credibility, to me no matter how much its overplayed I will still listen to 3 hours of straight Stairway to Heaven than listen to 3 hours of Justin Bieber songs, (then again anyone over 12 would too).
